Conference tournament week always brings a different kind of energy to college basketball. In the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, that energy will fill Norfolk Scope Arena once again.
The 2026 MEAC men’s basketball tournament runs March 11 through March 14 in Norfolk, Virginia, where seven teams will battle for the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Every possession matters, every mistake can end a season, and every team arrives knowing the path to March Madness runs through one building.
Howard enters the tournament as the regular season champion and the No. 1 seed, but the MEAC has a habit of producing unpredictable runs and dramatic finishes.
Defending champion Norfolk State is still lurking. Morgan State finished the regular season strong. North Carolina Central has a history of tournament success.
All of that makes the MEAC one of the most fascinating brackets of Championship Week.
Howard earned the top seed and the biggest advantage
Howard spent the entire conference season proving it was the most consistent team in the MEAC.
The Bison finished 11-3 in conference play and 20-10 overall, capturing the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the tournament. That finish comes with a significant reward.
Howard will not have to play until the semifinal round on March 13.
In a tournament where most teams must survive multiple games in a short span, that extra rest could make a major difference. The Bison will face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between No. 2 Morgan State and No. 7 Delaware State.
Howard also enters the tournament riding momentum, winning six straight games to close the regular season.
Now the challenge is finishing the job.

Morgan State arrives with momentum
If there is a team capable of challenging Howard immediately, it may be Morgan State.
The Bears secured the No. 2 seed after going 10-4 in MEAC play and closing the regular season by winning four of their final five games. That stretch included a key victory over Coppin State to lock up their spot near the top of the standings.
Morgan State will open tournament play on March 11 against No. 7 Delaware State.
While the Hornets struggled through conference play, single elimination tournaments often create opportunities for surprises. Morgan State cannot afford to look ahead to a potential semifinal with Howard.
But if the Bears take care of business, that matchup could easily become the game everyone in Norfolk is waiting for.
Norfolk State is the defending champion for a reason
When it comes to conference tournaments, experience matters.
Norfolk State proved that last season by capturing the 2025 MEAC tournament championship and earning the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Spartans finished this regular season at 8-6 in conference play and enter the bracket as the No. 4 seed. That might look modest on paper, but Norfolk State has already shown it knows how to win when the stakes are highest.
Their tournament run begins with a quarterfinal matchup against No. 5 South Carolina State.
That game carries an extra layer of intrigue because it is a rematch of last year’s MEAC championship game.
North Carolina Central and Maryland Eastern Shore could shake up the bracket
Another quarterfinal matchup features No. 3 North Carolina Central facing No. 6 Maryland Eastern Shore.
North Carolina Central has been one of the most successful programs in recent MEAC tournament history, winning multiple championships during the past decade. The Eagles know how to navigate the pressure of Championship Week.
Maryland Eastern Shore, meanwhile, enters as a dangerous underdog. In a conference where the margin between teams is often thin, a hot shooting night or defensive surge can flip a game instantly.
The winner of this matchup will move into the semifinal round and face either Norfolk State or South Carolina State.
That side of the bracket could quickly become a grind.

One more chapter in a long tournament history
The MEAC men’s basketball tournament has been part of college basketball since 1972, producing decades of unforgettable moments and sending some memorable teams to the NCAA Tournament.
Programs like North Carolina A&T, Hampton, and Norfolk State have built strong tournament traditions over the years. In recent seasons, Howard has begun building one of its own.
But history does not win games in March.
For the seven teams arriving in Norfolk, the mission is simple. Win the bracket, cut down the nets, and claim the MEAC’s ticket to March Madness.
And if the past is any indication, the road there will not be simple.
