Illinois lands overlooked in-state star Lincoln Williams after remarkable recruiting journey

The Kankakee scoring machine nearly slipped through the cracks, but Brad Underwood and the Illini may have found one of the most intriguing late additions in the 2026 class.

Illinois wasn't expected to make another significant addition this late in the recruiting cycle.

Then Lincoln Williams became available.

On Monday, Brad Underwood and the Illini officially signed the Kankakee standout, adding one of Illinois' most productive high school players to an already highly regarded 2026 recruiting class. While Williams arrives as a three-star prospect, his story is far more complicated than a typical recruiting ranking.

The 6-foot-5 wing finished his high school career as Kankakee's all-time leading scorer with 1,853 points and put together one of the best senior seasons in the state, averaging 26 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks per game.

He now heads to Champaign after a recruiting process that took several unexpected twists.

Williams dominated Illinois high school basketball

Williams helped lead Kankakee to a school-record 29-2 season and became one of the most feared scorers in Illinois.

His senior campaign included a school-record 703 points and a 44-point explosion against Thornridge. He finished third in Illinois Mr. Basketball voting and earned first-team Class 3A All-State honors.

The season ended in heartbreaking fashion, however.

After entering the postseason with championship aspirations, Williams and Kankakee saw their season come to an end against Morton in the sectional final at Ottawa. It wasn't the ending Williams envisioned, but it did little to diminish what had been a historic career.

Why Illinois stayed patient

For much of the recruiting process, Williams appeared destined to commit elsewhere.

Offers arrived from programs including TCU, Arizona State, Virginia Tech and DePaul. Illinois remained interested but recruiting momentum seemed to cool at various points.

Ultimately, the relationship Williams built with Underwood and the Illini staff proved critical.

"I chose to stay home," Williams told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The local connection mattered. So did family.

Williams grew up visiting Champaign regularly, and the opportunity to play just over an hour from Kankakee allows his support system to remain close throughout his college career.

Why Williams could become a hidden gem

Illinois doesn't need Williams to arrive as an instant star.

What makes him intriguing is the skill set he brings to a roster loaded with size and offensive talent.

Williams is an explosive athlete with exceptional length on the wing. Underwood specifically highlighted his ability to guard multiple positions and believes he has the potential to become an elite defender at the college level.

His jump shot remains a work in progress, but his athleticism, defensive versatility and motor give him a clear pathway to earning minutes.

For a recruiting class already ranked among the nation's best, Illinois may have quietly added one of the state's most motivated prospects.

And after a winding recruiting journey that included setbacks, questions and plenty of patience, Williams finally gets the opportunity he has been chasing.
