Dusty May

It’s important in these searches to leave no stone unturned. Two searches ago, the Hoosiers grabbed a fantastic mid-major coach in Archie Miller who folded in the Big Ten, while Woodson was clearly someone very familiar with the program who didn’t check other boxes. Had this article been written last year, May would have satisfied both boxes, but his situation is a little more complicated now that he’s in his first year as a Big Ten head coach.

Native to Terre Haute, May was a student manager under Bob Knight at Indiana before beginning his own coaching career. May was an aide or assistant at a number of schools, including a stint at Florida, before getting Florida Atlantic’s head coaching job in 2018. His six years with the Owls were highlighted by that Final Four two years ago. After a pair of great seasons, May left Boca Raton for the Michigan job last offseason and is off to an awesome start in year one.

Could the Hoosiers actually lure away Michigan’s first-year head coach because of his past connection to this program? There’s still a lot of basketball to be played this season, but the job that May is doing with the Wolverines is pretty incredible, having this team ranked and looking like one of the Big Ten’s best after a rough season last year. May is absolutely worth a look and could certainly be lured back to Bloomington, though this seems like way more of a stretch than it might have been last year.
