At 59 years old, Joe Jones remains one of the most respected and consistent head coaches in mid-major basketball. Entering his 14th season at Boston University, Jones continues to guide the Terriers with a focus on toughness, player growth, and accountability. Since taking over in 2011, he has built a reliable program that regularly finishes among the Patriot League’s upper tier.

The Terriers have yet to reach the NCAA Tournament under Jones, but their consistency has been impressive. His lone Patriot League tournament title came in 2020, a year when Boston earned an NCAA berth that never materialized because of the COVID-19 cancellation. Since then, the Terriers have continued to contend, posting multiple top-three finishes and staying competitive every season.

Last year, Boston went 16-16 overall and 10-8 in Patriot League play, another example of Jones’ ability to keep his teams organized and competitive. His squads are known for their defense, rebounding, and disciplined half-court execution. In conference play, Jones owns a 144-102 record, placing him among the most accomplished coaches in program history.

Before arriving in Boston, Jones spent seven seasons as head coach at Columbia, helping the Lions remain competitive in a tough Ivy League environment. He also served as an assistant under Jay Wright at Hofstra and later at Villanova, giving him valuable experience under one of the game’s most respected coaches.

A former point guard at SUNY Oswego, Jones brings the same leadership traits from his playing days to his coaching career. He ranks fourth all-time in assists and fifth in steals in Oswego history, stats that mirror the unselfish and defensive-minded identity he has instilled in his teams.

Boston University’s Early 2025-26 Schedule:

  • Monday, November 3 – at Northeastern
  • Saturday, November 8 – at Northwestern
  • Wednesday, November 12 – vs. Brown (Home Opener)
  • Saturday, November 15 – vs. Merrimack

Boston opens the new season with two tough road tests before returning home for a pair of local matchups. With Jones at the helm, the Terriers once again look poised to compete for a spot near the top of the Patriot League standings.
