The last Tuesday of the college basketball regular season featured plenty of compelling results, including some upsets and the start of conference tournaments. There were also some low moments for a few teams, especially those who are on the bubble.
Here is a look at the biggest losers from a Bracketology standpoint.Â
West Virginia - 65-63 loss at Kansas State
It’s been a brutal stretch for the Mountaineers, losing four of the last five games. Those losses have included Utah, Oklahoma State, and now a Kansas State squad who’s without PJ Haggerty on Tuesday. If there was any hope left on the bubble for West Virginia, this latest defeat has taken them fully off the bubble, barring a miracle run in the Big 12 Tournament.
Kansas - 70-60 loss at Arizona State
Kansas is safely in the NCAA Tournament field but that doesn’t mean their games aren’t important, as they’re trying to get into the protected seed range. But they’ve now lost three of the last four games, including a road loss at ASU, one of the worst teams in the Big 12. This is the kind of result that could push them not only to a 4 seed, but possible a 5 if they can’t beat Kansas State.
San Diego State - 86-77 loss at Boise State
At one point, the Aztecs looked to be in the NCAA Tournament field. However, they’ve now lost four of the last five games, including a road loss at Boise State. Losing at the Broncos isn’t shameful on its own but that was a Quad 1 opportunity and a chance to get back on track on the bubble. Now, they’re trending the same way as West Virginia, towards out of the bubble completely.
Utah State - 92-65 loss at UNLV
Utah State is in a much better position compared to San Diego State, with a projected seed range around 7-9. But losing at UNLV is a dent to the Aggies, which could push them closer to the bubble, having lost three of the last four games. A home game against New Mexico to end the regular season now has even more importance for the Aggies.
