One of the last major dominos of the transfer portal fell late Monday night when Milan Momcilovic officially committed to Kentucky. A star for the last three seasons at Iowa State, Momcilovic entered the transfer portal and was testing his draft eligibility but was one of a number of players who pulled out of the draft late last week. After brief considerations, he’ll now take his talents to Lexington for his senior season.

A 6-8 forward originally from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, Momcilovic was widely considered a Top 50 recruit in the class of 2023 and opted to join TJ Otzelberger’s program. He instantly played a major role for the Cyclones and would wind up starting more than 100 games over his three seasons in Ames, growing from an unexpected freshman contender to one of the best offensive players in the nation.

Kentucky lands Iowa State transfer Milan Momcilovic

His first year saw All-Freshman honors in the Big 12 as Momcilovic averaged double-figures and aided the Cyclones on a Sweet Sixteen run. A hand injury kept him out of several weeks of Big 12 play as a sophomore but it was still a very productive season, though his more recent work really blew that all out of the water.

Momcilovic is fresh off a junior year where he put up 16.9 points per game and developed perhaps into the best raw shooter in the nation. Not only did he earned All-Big 12 honors and help the Cyclones to another Sweet Sixteen, he also led the entire nation by shooting 48.7% from outside the arc. Not only was he efficient from outside the arc, nobody in the country made more 3-pointers than him this past season.

While Arizona and Louisville were certainly two names to watch, Momcilovic always felt like he was heading to Kentucky. The Wildcats have had what some would consider a disappointingly quiet offseason, missing on several notable transfer over the last two months. This time around, Mark Pope and his staff swung big and brought home an enormous weapon.

If he can even come close to replicating his success as a junior, Momcilovic instantly propels the SEC, adding the best pure shooter in the nation to a roster that’s added Alex Wilkins, Zoom Diallo, and a few other key pieces. Momcilovic may be just one player but he’s the kind of recruiting victory that can single-handedly safe an offseason and put Pope’s team in an enviable position on the court. Do you think he can put up similar numbers with the Wildcats?
