Mark Pope might be building something much bigger than Kentucky's 2026-27 roster.

One of the Wildcats' most intriguing recruiting pursuits involves five-star 2027 center Lewis Uvwo, and Kentucky appears to have given itself a legitimate opportunity to become a major factor in his recruitment.

Uvwo visited Lexington over the weekend, according to A Sea of Blue, and the visit reportedly generated positive momentum for Kentucky.

That's significant.

Uvwo isn't simply another prospect Kentucky would like to add.

The 6-foot-11, 225-pound center from Prolific Prep is regarded as one of the premier prospects in the 2027 class and the No. 1 center in the class, according to the report.

Landing him would make quite a statement about where Pope's recruiting operation is headed.

Kentucky has already demonstrated that it can use the transfer portal to construct a talented roster.

The next step is making sure elite high school prospects continue viewing Lexington as one of college basketball's premier destinations.

Uvwo could help accomplish exactly that.

His visit coincided with Kentucky's home football game against Alabama, providing the Wildcats an opportunity to show him something recruiting rankings can't quantify: what Lexington feels like when the entire campus is buzzing.

Kentucky apparently made an impression.

That doesn't mean a commitment is imminent. Uvwo's recruitment remains ongoing, and Kentucky still has work ahead.

But becoming a serious contender for an elite center is considerably different from simply appearing somewhere on his recruiting list.

Kentucky's 2027 class could become something special

There is another reason Wildcats fans should watch this closely.

Kentucky is also pursuing five-star forward Ryan Hampton, giving Pope an opportunity to potentially assemble an impressive high school foundation for 2027.

That's where this becomes bigger than one recruiting visit.

College basketball roster construction now demands flexibility. Coaches have to recruit high school stars, navigate the transfer portal, handle NBA Draft decisions and account for an increasingly complicated eligibility landscape.

Pope has shown a willingness to attack virtually every avenue.

Now imagine pairing that roster-building approach with consistent success landing the country's premier high school prospects.

Kentucky doesn't have Uvwo yet.

But after this weekend, the Wildcats appear to have given one of the nation's best centers another reason to seriously consider Lexington.

And for Kentucky, that's a pretty good place to be.
