The NCAA Tournament always resets itself once the Sweet 16 arrives.
The chaos of the first weekend fades, but the intensity only grows. This is where everything tightens. Rotations shrink. Possessions matter more. And the teams left stop dreaming about surviving and start thinking about winning it all.
There’s also one major shift hanging over this field. With Florida eliminated after Iowa’s 73-72 upset, there will be a new national champion. No safety net. No defending power left standing.
Just opportunity.
And the performances that got these teams here are already starting to define this tournament. Fletcher Loyer poured in 24 points to push Purdue forward. Tamin Lipsey dropped 26 to lead Iowa State. And Michigan has leaned on Big Ten Player of the Year Yaxel Lendeborg, who delivered 25 in their win to keep a dominant season rolling.

Arizona vs. Arkansas brings a high-level guard battle with Jaden Bradley facing Darius Acuff, a matchup that could dictate tempo.
Nebraska vs. Iowa is a true Big Ten fight, with Iowa led by Ben McCollum, one of the most respected coaches in March. Iowa won the last matchup at home over the Cornhuskers 57-52 on February 17th.
Duke vs. St. John’s is Jon Scheyer vs. Rick Pitino, a clash of coaching styles and expectations. Two storyied college basketball programs mix it up here.
Alabama vs. Michigan features two of the highest-scoring teams left in the field, making it one of the most explosive games of the Sweet 16.
UConn vs. Michigan State is Dan Hurley vs. Tom Izzo, a matchup built on toughness, experience, and March pedigree. The Spartans are the last Big Ten team to win a national title.
Conference dominance and one true Cinderella
The Sweet 16 field tells a story of conference strength and survival.
The Big Ten leads the way with six teams still alive, continuing a dominant run through the bracket. The SEC follows with four teams, while the Big 12 places three into the Sweet 16.
And then there’s Texas.
The No. 11 seed Longhorns are the clear Cinderella of this group. A 21-14 team that has already outlasted expectations, now sitting just two wins away from the Final Four. In a field filled with heavyweights, Texas is the reminder that March doesn’t always follow the script.
Sixteen teams remain.
By the end of Friday night, only eight will still be playing.
The madness will be back before you know it. Thursday night from San Jose.
