By the time Friday night arrives, the NCAA Tournament already feels alive in a different way.
Thursday gave us the reminder we get every year. Nothing is guaranteed. Some teams looked comfortable right away. Others had to fight just to survive. And at least a few results probably made you second guess what you thought you knew about this bracket.
Now comes the second wave.
This is where more heavy hitters take the floor, but it is also where pressure starts to settle in. The nerves are real. The adjustments matter more. And the teams that can stay steady for 40 minutes usually separate themselves.
There is still chaos out there. There always is.
But Friday night is where you begin to see who is actually built for this.

Games that could take over the night
Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Clemson Tigers
This feels like one of those games that comes down to who can stay comfortable late. Iowa will try to find rhythm offensively, while Clemson, under Brad Brownell, is more than fine turning this into a physical game. RJ Godfrey, Clemson’s leading scorer at 11.9 points per game, is not flashy but he is steady. In a game like this, that matters.
Northern Iowa Panthers vs. St. John’s Red Storm
Northern Iowa is not your typical 12 seed story. This is a team that finished sixth in the Missouri Valley during the regular season, then got hot at the right time and won the conference tournament. That confidence carries over. St. John’s, at 28-6 under Rick Pitino, has had a strong season and leans on Zuby Ejifor, who leads the team with 16.3 points per game. If this slows down, UNI is going to feel very comfortable.
UCF Knights vs. UCLA Bruins
Mick Cronin’s UCLA teams are built for games like this. They defend, they stay composed and they do not rush anything. UCF has the athleticism to challenge that, though, and if they can speed things up, it could force UCLA out of its comfort zone. This feels like a game where the final five minutes decide everything.
Missouri Tigers vs. Miami Hurricanes
Missouri quietly finds itself in a favorable spot, playing this game in nearby St. Louis with what should feel like a home crowd. That matters in March. Miami, led by head coach Jai Lucas, brings experience and balance. Missouri will try to ride energy and momentum. Miami will try to stay calm and execute. This one could swing either way late.
The top seeds enter the spotlight
Florida, Purdue and UConn all take the floor with expectations that are clear.
Florida has one of the best rebounders in the country in Rueben Chinyelu, and that can control a game like this if things stay on script. Purdue, even at 27-8, still has one of the most efficient offenses in the country and knows how to wear teams down over time. UConn, sitting at 29-5, brings balance and experience that tends to show up in March.
These are games where the favorites are expected to take control early.
But after what Thursday showed, nothing feels automatic.
Why the night window hits different
There is a noticeable shift once these games move into the evening.
Everything tightens up. Possessions matter more. Mistakes feel bigger.
Tomorrow, we are on to 32!
