Matt Painter puts Miami (Ohio) HC in his place with takedown

Matt Painter didn’t hold back when asked about Miami (Ohio)’s scheduling complaints, firing back with a blunt response as the RedHawks’ season ends and Purdue keeps dancing.

March always brings out a little extra edge. Not just in the games, but in the conversations around them. That showed up this week when Miami (Ohio) head coach Travis Steele pushed back on the idea that high-major teams are willing to schedule programs like his.

It didn’t take long for Purdue head coach Matt Painter to respond. And he didn’t sugarcoat it.

Painter keeps it simple and direct

Painter’s message was straightforward. He’s heard the complaints before, and he wasn’t buying all of it.

“The guy at Miami (Ohio) says nobody will play us,” Painter said. “Well, Akron’s been the best team in the league, Kent State’s been the best team in the league. We played them. Year before that, Toledo’s been a damn good team in that league. We played them.”

That’s about as direct as it gets.

Painter didn’t get into debates. He pointed to actual games. In his mind, the narrative doesn’t fully match reality. He also referred to Travis Steele as, "the guy."

Miami (Ohio) had its shot but ran into a wall

At the same time, it’s easy to see where Steele is coming from.

Miami (Ohio) put together a huge regular season, starting 31-0 and still dealing with questions about who they played and how good they really were.

But once the tournament started, the RedHawks ran into a tough matchup and saw their season end quickly. Tennessee pulled away for a 78-56 win, a result that only adds more fuel to the ongoing debate about mid-major resumes versus high-major competition.

That’s the harsh reality of March. You don’t always get multiple chances to prove it.

Now Purdue steps into the spotlight

While Miami (Ohio) is heading home, Purdue is still very much in the middle of its run.

The Boilermakers are set to play Sunday at 12:10 p.m. ET in St. Louis, with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line. It’s another big stage, another opportunity, and exactly the kind of moment Painter was talking about. Their opponent is from the ACC - the Miami Hurricanes.

Because eventually, all the talk fades.

March settles everything

That’s what makes this back-and-forth interesting. Both sides think they’re right. Just like arguing with a sibling.

Painter is pointing to proof. Steele is pointing to a system that still feels stacked.

But in March, there’s nowhere to hide.

You either show it or you don’t. And once the games tip off, that’s the only thing anyone remembers.
