Miami did not wait for another program to come calling for Jai Lucas. After overseeing one of the most impressive turnarounds in college basketball last season, Lucas reportedly agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Hurricanes. ESPN’s Jeff Borzello first reported the agreement Wednesday, while the Associated Press reported that the reworked deal also included a raise.
It is a significant commitment to a 37-year-old coach who has spent only one season running his own program. It is also one of the easiest decisions Miami could have made. Lucas inherited a team that finished 7-24 overall and 3-17 in ACC play during the 2024-25 season. Miami did not return a single player from that roster, leaving its new coach to build almost everything from the ground up.
One year later, the Hurricanes were 26-9, finished 13-5 in the ACC and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. That is not a promising start. That is a complete transformation.

Miami moved before the coaching carousel could become a problem
Lucas was already viewed as one of the sport’s top young assistants before Miami hired him in March 2025. He developed his reputation through stops at Texas, Kentucky and Duke, becoming the Blue Devils’ associate head coach before accepting the Miami position. His recruiting connections and ability to relate to players made him an attractive candidate, but his first season proved he could do much more than help assemble talent.
Lucas constructed a roster, established a culture and immediately produced results. Miami defeated Missouri in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before its season ended against Purdue. Even with that loss, the Hurricanes had won 19 more games than the previous year and reached March Madness for the first time under their new coach.
According to the AP, Lucas was mentioned as a potential candidate for multiple openings after the season. Miami’s decision to rework his contract makes sure those conversations do not become an annual distraction.
The Hurricanes are betting that last season was the beginning of something sustainable. Everything Lucas has done since arriving suggests that is a bet worth making.

The extension is not merely a reward for what Lucas already accomplished. It is a commitment to where Miami could go next.
Star forward Shelton Henderson is back, giving the Hurricanes a foundational piece for Lucas’ second roster. Miami also assembled the No. 2 transfer portal class in On3’s rankings, headlined by former Georgia center Somto Cyril, former Villanova guard Acaden Lewis and former LSU forward Robert Miller III.
Lucas will still have to blend those additions into a cohesive rotation. The roster reconstruction that defines modern college basketball can quickly punish any coach who misses on fit or chemistry.
But Lucas already passed an even more difficult version of that test. He won 26 games without inheriting a single returning player.
Following Miami’s NCAA Tournament loss, Lucas said the program had built a strong foundation. He also made it clear that simply reaching the second round would not become the Hurricanes’ standard.
His next goal was the Sweet 16. The long-term goal, he said, remained winning national championships.
That ambition will create greater expectations entering Year 2, and Miami can no longer sneak up on the ACC. The Hurricanes now have a nationally respected coach, a talented roster and proof that Lucas’ approach works.
Miami could have waited for Lucas to produce another successful season before addressing his contract. Instead, the Hurricanes recognized where this was heading.
