Miami’s New Era Begins with Promise and Plenty of Tests Ahead

Jai Lucas’ first season at Miami is off to a promising start after an opening win over Jacksonville, but a demanding non-conference slate will quickly test how ready the Hurricanes really are.

The Jai Lucas era is underway in Coral Gables, and it started the right way. Miami opened the 2025-26 season with an 86-69 win over Jacksonville, showing off flashes of an exciting, up-tempo brand of basketball that fans have been waiting for. The Hurricanes shared the ball well, played with energy on defense, and looked sharp for a team still learning a new system.

There’s no time to slow down, though. Miami faces a non-conference schedule packed with in-state rivals, mid-major challengers, and national powerhouses that will quickly show where this program stands.

Thursday, November 6 vs. Bethune-Cookman

The Hurricanes get another opportunity to tighten their rotation against a scrappy Wildcats team. Bethune-Cookman nearly upset Auburn in their opener, so Miami can’t afford to take this one lightly. Expect Lucas to continue experimenting with lineups while demanding sharper execution at home.

Monday, November 10 vs. Stetson

Another in-state matchup and another chance for the Hurricanes to build chemistry. Stetson doesn’t have the depth to hang for 40 minutes, but the Hatters can shoot from outside. This is a game where Miami’s defensive communication will be put to the test.

Sunday, November 16 vs. Florida (in Jacksonville)

The highlight of Miami’s early schedule comes against the rival Gators. Florida stumbled out of the gate with a loss to Arizona but remains loaded with talent. This neutral-site matchup should provide the first true measuring stick for Lucas’ squad. A win here would make noise across the college basketball landscape.

Thursday, November 20 vs. Elon

Back in Coral Gables, Miami welcomes Elon for a midweek matchup. The Phoenix are rebuilding and lack the size and athleticism to match up inside. Expect the Hurricanes’ depth and tempo to take over early.

Sunday, November 23 vs. Delaware State

Miami should have little trouble in this one. The Hornets are in the midst of a long-term rebuild and will struggle to keep up with Miami’s speed and shot-making. Still, it’s another chance to keep building confidence before Thanksgiving.

Thursday, November 27 vs. BYU (in Orlando)

A major showdown against a national contender. BYU’s AJ Dybantsa is already one of the most talked-about freshmen in the country, and the Cougars are expected to be in the national title conversation. Miami’s defense will need to be locked in to contain BYU’s balanced attack.

Friday, November 28 vs. Dayton or Georgetown (in Orlando)

Miami closes its Orlando trip with a matchup against either Dayton or Georgetown. Both programs have strong traditions and capable rosters. This game will test the Hurricanes’ ability to adjust quickly in a tournament-style setting.

Tuesday, December 2 at Ole Miss

Miami finally leaves the state of Florida for the first time this season. The trip to Oxford brings a physical SEC opponent with a tough home environment. This will be a test of Miami’s composure and resilience on the road.

Saturday, December 6 vs. Southern Miss

Back home in Coral Gables, the Hurricanes face a Golden Eagles team that loves to grind games out. Expect Miami to push the pace and rely on its perimeter play to take control.

Saturday, December 13 vs. Louisiana-Monroe

This is another game where depth will matter. Miami should dominate on both ends, but Coach Lucas will want to see his team stay sharp and disciplined against a lesser opponent.

Tuesday, December 16 vs. Florida International

The crosstown matchup always brings energy. FIU will come ready to play, but Miami’s talent edge should be too much to overcome. The Hurricanes will look to keep momentum rolling before the holidays.

Sunday, December 21 vs. North Florida

Miami closes out its non-conference slate at home against North Florida. It’s a perfect opportunity to finish strong and fine-tune before ACC play begins.

The Road Ahead

Miami’s non-conference schedule is both challenging and balanced, offering the new coaching staff a mix of tests and tune-ups. The Hurricanes showed promise in their debut, and if they can continue to build chemistry and consistency, this could be the start of something special in Coral Gables.
