Earliest this week the college basketball season came to an end as Michigan cut down the nets as national champions, claiming their first title in nearly four decades. Mere days later they are already making headlines in the transfer portal, landing transfer JP Estrella as the next big weapon in the frontcourt.

A 6-11 forward originally out of Maine, Estrella was a Top 60 recruit and 4-star prospect out of the Class of 2023 who spent his first three collegiate campaigns at Tennessee. He played solely as a reserve as a true freshman before missing most of his second season due to injury. Fortunately, Estrella developed into a productive player during a healthy third year in Knoxville this past season.

Michigan lands Tennessee transfer J. P. Estrella

Part of another deep Tournament run for the Volunteers, Estrella averaged 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds and had earned his way into the starting lineup for Tennessee by season’s end. After starting the season on a high note, Estrella was really hitting his stride near the end of the year, with consecutive 20-point performances to cap off SEC play, including a 20-point, 10-rebound effort in a tough loss to rival Vanderbilt.

More recently, Estrella had a double-double against Miami-Ohio and was a reliable weapon during the Volunteers’ run to the Elite Eight. By season’s end, he was the third-leading scorer for Tennessee and has made just over 60% of his 2-point field goal attempts. Estrella also stands out for his work on the boards, rating as one of the best offensive rebounders in the entire transfer portal and certainly one of the best in last season’s SEC.

Perhaps seeking a major payday, Estrella entered the transfer portal not too long ago and joined a long list of talented and sizeable big men. He becomes one of the first significant dominoes to fall in this offseason and joins Michigan just days after the Wolverines won the national title. Estrella wasn’t on the court all three seasons, but after three tough defeats in the Elite Eight he’s joining a program hungry for even more success next year.

Michigan head coach Dusty May has quickly built very successful teams depending on talented bigs and Estrella will certainly factor into that potential next season. His decision may indicate that Aday Mara is off to professional basketball, but May and his staff likely believe that they can shape Estrella in the same mold. While he doesn’t track as the same level of shot blocker, Estrella is a very talented athlete around the basket and on the boards and a fantastic early addition for the Wolverines.
