Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans are back for another season of round ball in East Lansing.
Spartans Test Themselves Early and Often
The Spartans will once again be one of the Big Ten’s top contenders, but before league play begins, Izzo has built another brutal non-conference schedule. Michigan State remains one of the most fearless programs when it comes to early-season tests, and this year’s slate is no exception. Here’s a look at what’s ahead for the Spartans in 2025-26:
Monday, November 3 – Colgate at Michigan State
Colgate comes to the Breslin Center to open the season. It’s the perfect tune-up game for the Spartans, who will use this one to find rhythm and let the home crowd get their first look at the new roster. Expect Izzo’s group to be sharp out of the gate.
Saturday, November 8 – Arkansas at Michigan State
A marquee showdown arrives early as John Calipari brings his Arkansas Razorbacks to East Lansing. Two powerhouse programs and Hall of Fame coaches square off in what could be an early-season classic — and a big-time test for both teams.
Thursday, November 13 – San Jose State at Michigan State
The Spartans stay home for another contest, facing San Jose State in what should be a manageable matchup. It’s another chance for Izzo to experiment with rotations before the heavy hitters arrive.
Tuesday, November 18 – Michigan State vs. Kentucky (Madison Square Garden)
The Champions Classic returns to Madison Square Garden with a heavyweight tilt between Michigan State and Kentucky. The Spartans have won six of the last ten meetings and took the 2022 matchup by nine points. Whenever Izzo and Kentucky share the floor, it’s must-watch basketball.
Friday, November 21 – Detroit Mercy at Michigan State
The Spartans return home to face in-state foe Detroit Mercy. The Titans will bring their best shot, but the Spartans’ depth and energy at home should carry the night.
Tuesday, November 25 – Michigan State vs. East Carolina (Fort Myers Classic)
The Spartans head south to Florida for the Fort Myers Classic, opening with East Carolina. Izzo’s team will enjoy the sunshine, but expect business as usual once the ball tips.
Thursday, November 27 – Michigan State vs. North Carolina (Fort Myers Classic)
Michigan State’s third major matchup of the month comes against North Carolina. The two bluebloods meet again after last season’s 94-91 overtime thriller that went the Spartans’ way. It’s another potential classic between two storied programs.
Saturday, December 6 – Duke at Michigan State
Duke visits East Lansing for yet another high-profile clash. Izzo’s crew will try to turn the tables on a series that’s been dominated by the Blue Devils, who have won 10 of the last 12 meetings. The Breslin Center will be rocking for this one.
Tuesday, December 16 – Toledo at Michigan State
The Rockets visit in mid-December for a regional rivalry game. The Ohio-Michigan border always brings extra energy, and this one should be no different.
Saturday, December 20 – Michigan State vs. Oakland (Little Caesars Arena)
In-state action moves to Detroit as Michigan State faces Oakland at the Pistons’ home arena. The Spartans have never lost to the Golden Grizzlies, winning all 22 previous meetings, including by 19 points last season.
Monday, December 29 – Cornell at Michigan State
An Ivy League visitor wraps up the non-conference slate. The Spartans will look to close strong before diving into the Big Ten grind.
Michigan State’s schedule once again reflects Izzo’s philosophy, face the best to become the best. With matchups against Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, and Arkansas, the Spartans will be tested early. But that’s exactly how Izzo likes it, and it’s why Michigan State always seems ready when March Madness rolls around.
