Looking at the Racers

Murray State is an offensive minded team with a lot of veteran talent, size and great depth. First year coach Ryan Miller has assembled a team that can score in bunches and its second unit would rival the starting five of some other Valley teams.

Nine Racers average over 14 minutes and eight average over six points per game. While six players stand 6’8 or better and they have a legitimate center in Fred King (12.7 points & 8.5 rebounds), they love to shoot the three. The Racers lead the Valley and are 26th in the nation in scoring and play a blistering pace.

UIC transfer Javon Jackson leads the Racer offensive attack (17.1 ppg), and Murray’s offense is extremely balanced. Fred King is one of the Valley’s top centers and likely Sixth Man of the Year and Freshman of the Year Roman Domon is a multi-faceted talent who can score at all three levels and is a dynamic passer.

During league-only action, King leads the MVC in rebounds per game (8.9), blocks (2.4) and is eleventh in scoring (13.6). While ‘just’ 6’9 he is a physical and dominating inside presence.

Domon and fellow French-born freshman Mathis Courbon are two of Murray’s three players making 80 percent of their free throws.

This is a very skilled team.

During Valley games the Racers lead the league in free throw percentage and are second to Belmont in field goal percentage. Over the entire season, Kenpom.com ranks them in the top 60 nationally in virtually every offensive category.

Ryan Miller’s lengthy experience as an assistant coach under some of the top minds in basketball has prepared him well for his first head coaching job. His recent successes at Creighton have fueled these early achievements at Murray.

He comes from a basketball family. Not only is he the brother of former NBA star Mike Miller, but coaches and players are all over his family tree. Miller is ultra-competitive, and his players pick up on his passion.
