10. BYU (2-0)
Big expectations are on the shoulders of the players at BYU this season and there are many reasons. Kevin Young’s first season saw a Sweet Sixteen run and a fantastic performance, but the additions from this offseason have put a target on BYU’s back. Top prospect AJ Dybantsa and talented transfer Rob Wright Jr. are a big reason why a Big 12 title could be in the works this season.
The Cougars had a chance on opening night to show that talent and it worked out, winning 71-66 over Villanova in Las Vegas. Dybantsa had a marvelous debut with 21 points and 6 rebounds while Richie Saunders proved his value with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Far less drama was had on Saturday night as BYU knocked off Holy Cross 98-53 in their home opener. Saunders led with 20 points, Dybantsa added 17, and the Cougars made quick work of this game.
There’s an outstanding Big 3 here between Dybantsa, Saunders, and Wright and that trio alone is going to win a ton of games this season. The Cougars looked the part of a Top 10 team with their work but the challenges ahead will take even more of their resolve. There’s a great foundation here already and a tough test upcoming against UConn next weekend in a huge matchup in Boston.
