NCAA Basketball: Auburn, Gonzaga, Ohio State rise in latest top 25 power rankings

16. Baylor (1-1)
We could discuss what Scott Drew has meant for this program, as the veteran head coach delivered Baylor’s first national title just over three years ago. However, nobody is living in the past, and the Bears’ lack of postseason success since that run is somewhat concerning. Regardless, Baylor has turned into a national contender on a near-yearly basis, and they’re sitting trying to establish their presence early in the season.
Among the contenders, the Bears easily had the toughest opening week, marred by their pitiful performance on opening night. Norchad Omier had 15 points and 9 rebounds in his Baylor debut in a devastating 101-63 loss to Gonzaga, though the weekend went better. The Bears were in Dallas and hung on for a 72-67 win over Arkansas, their second ranked opponent of the week. Jayden Nunn had 16 points and was one of five Bears in double figures.
Monday’s performance was abhorrent, especially on the defensive end as the Bears gave up over 100 points. Instead of panicking and caving under, they played tough and bounced back when given the opportunity later in the week. We’re going to see the Baylor team that showed up in Dallas more times than the one that fell apart in Spokane, especially with the raw talent and experience on this roster. They’ll follow up that tough opening week with a few mid-major foes at home.
