NCAA Basketball: Best dunks so far this 2024-25 season

The season is young but the poster dunks have been plentiful

The first month of college basketball is almost over. We've seen upsets, blowouts, and most importantly, some ridiculously good dunks. From the reigning national champions to mid-majors, there have been plenty of high-flying slams. Here are six of the best ones from around the country thus far.

Mister Dean vs SWU

Not only is this one of the best dunks of the 2024-25 season, it comes from a guy with one of the best names in all of college hoops. Mister Dean, a 6-foot-6 freshman out of Florida, has been balling to start his college career. Averaging 19.7 points and 6 boards, he's been much more than just a dunker this season.

Setting the tone at the beginning of the game against Southern Wesleyan, Dean levitated for the thunderous dunk. A classic wrong place wrong time moment for the defender, shoutout to him for laughing it off. I'm unsure how else you should react after that good poster.

Jayden Ross vs East Texas A&M

The two-time defending champs have been rolling once again to start the season. The Huskies are 4-0 with four blowout wins versus subpar competition, but those wins have surely supplied their fair share of highlights.

Jayden Ross, a sophomore from Virginia, injected a shot of energy into the home crowd with this beauty of a dunk late in the first half.

John Fanta's “cleared for takeoff” call combined with the sound of the rim makes this one even better. Ross has been solid, and in addition to his athleticism, he’s averaged 9.3 points through his three games so far.

Coen Carr vs. Samford

Carr has already had his fair share of high-flying dunks to begin the season. From highlight-reel dunks like the one below to the usual alley-oop, he’s one of those guys that looks like he’s floating whenever he takes flight around the rim.

Here against Samford, he had the entire court to load up for the poster. Running the floor in transition where you could see from a mile away what was about to happen as the sophomore cranked it back for a powerful one-handed slam. Who doesn’t love a left-handed guy throwing it down? Something about it makes the play even better.

Carr has had a solid season to this point. He’s averaging 7.6 points per game along with 3.6 rebounds, including a strong showing in the Champions Classic against Kansas where he chipped in eight points and created some chaos with two steals.

V.J. Edgecombe vs. Gonzaga

Edgecombe easily put his name in the hat for a potential dunk of the year winner on opening night against the Zags. Baylor lost the game and got dominated from the jump, but it was the highly-touted freshman that provided one of the best moments of the game.

With Gonzaga up handily in garbage time, Mark Few elected to empty his bench with his son, Joe Few getting a chance to get in the game. That move looked to have backfired as he ended up being on the wrong end of Edgecombe as the freshman went up strong for one of the better poster dunks and stare downs you’ll find this season.

Baylor has done anything but duck competition through six games, already owning two losses. The talent is deep with Edgecombe being one of the headliners. He’s been off to a slower start than expected in terms of his efficiency, despite averaging 12.5 points per game.

Darius Hannah vs. Middle Tennessee State

Yes, more mid-major love. And if you weren’t paying attention to Bradley and Middle Tennessee State, you missed out on a solid game and an even better dunk.

Darius Hannah dropped the hammer off of this pick and roll with Bradley needing a spark to put the game away down the stretch. There wasn't a shred of hesitation from Hannah as he took one dribble and attacked the rim. Despite the end result. I give credit to MTSU’s Chris Loofe for making the effort to try and contest at the rim. Sometimes it goes your way and other times it doesn’t.

Frankie Collins vs. Michigan

Collins spent his first season of college hoops in Ann Arbor in 2021. Now with TCU, the senior has already provided a highlight-reel moment for the Horned Frogs.

This dunk is the only one where two players found themselves in harms way. The dead silence of the Crisler Center after he throws it down tells you everything you need to know about how good of a dunk this was.

Th irony here is this was not Collins’ first time showcasing an impressive dunk. He had a great one against, oddly enough, TCU in an NCAA tournament game while at Arizona State in 2023.
