Baylor
Scott Drew inherited nothing when he took over in Waco more than two decades ago and has now built a consistent and powerful basketball program. Baylor sits in contention on a yearly basis and cut down the nets as national champions just three and a half seasons ago. The staff busied themselves in the offseason and added some very important pieces to the lineup, but have the early results defended those actions?
As evident from the last slide, Baylor secured a nice win over Arkansas on Saturday night, but the loss a few days earlier was far more telling. The Bears traveled to Spokane on opening night and were pounded by Gonzaga, losing 101-63 in an embarrassing showing to open the season. The offense was mediocre and the defense was putrid in one of Baylor’s worst performances in recent memory.
After entering the season as a Top 10 program, we might be selling on the Bears as an elite team, though they certainly have time to win back that support. They showed up and held serve against a talented Razorbacks team and no one else in the country had this type of schedule for the opening week. Norchad Omier and Jeremy Roach need to continue to prove their worth, while this defense must make strides in the coming weeks against weaker foes.
