2. Iowa State (6-1)
There’s a lot to like about where this Iowa State program has been headed since T. J. Otzelberger took the reins three years ago. He’s instilled something special in Ames, with an unselfish offense and powerful defense that keeps the Cyclones in fantastic position. They looked the part at the Maui Invitational, only dropping a close game to an elite Auburn team. They then looked the part again this week back at home.
In a rare Top 6 matchup, the Cyclones hosted Marquette on Wednesday, playing as part of the Big 12/Big East Battle. Defending their home court, Iowa State had a great offensive performance and a strong late surge, winning 81-70 over the Golden Eagles. Keshon Gilbert stood out with 24 points and 7 assists while Joshua Jefferson added 15 points and 12 rebounds in the impressive victory.
Fresh off four straight high-profile matchups, we can say that Iowa State is a team that can win a loaded Big 12 this season. The defense has yet to even hit their stride and they’re still getting the job done in these impressive matchups. After all, they did average nearly 90 points a game over in Maui and have talent spread across their rotation. Next week sees them on the road, hoping for a rivalry win at Iowa before a quieter stretch around the holidays.
