While the calendar still shows early January, we’re a week deeper into the NCAA basketball season. At this time of year, that also means we’re a week deeper into conference play, which only just began a couple weeks ago across the country. The games matter at every point in the year though these mean even more for the hundreds of teams dotting the nation.

March Madness looms in the future and the weeks ahead will be full of anticipation and exciting basketball action. Long before we get to the Selection Sunday and the postseason drama, we’re going to see a lot more in this sport. More players will stand out, more programs will pull off great wins, and even more action will come in the weeks ahead.

The story is different at each conference, in each program, and for each individual player. Some of the top teams in the nation come from an SEC that will be a fierce fight every night for conference supremacy. Other teams are really standing out in recent days against weaker conferences and less impressive foes. Even if they come from mid-major leagues, there are still some very powerful programs and student-athletes out there.

Considering all that we’ve seen already two months into this season, we’re beginning our latest update to these Top 25 rankings. Nothing comes easy in this sport even to the most talented or well-coached teams. We’ll be looking back at what happened in the last seven days and seeing how much that changes our view point on which teams are the very best in the nation at this point. Remember, it’s not even the middle of January and a lot can change, but here’s where these teams stand right now.
