3. Iowa State Cyclones - 10-1

The Cyclones have been known for being one of the top defensive teams in NCAA Basketball. And technically, they still are. But it’s the offense that has shined through in the non-con, scoring 80+ points in every single game and ranking top-5 nationally with 88.5 ppg.

In a loaded Maui Invitational field, Iowa State handled itself well. They lost to Auburn in a close top-10 battle in the quarterfinals but bounced back to beat Dayton and Colorado. Then, they defeated top-5 Marquette at home. Plus, the Cy-Hawk rivalry went to them as well, winning 89-80 on the road at Iowa.

There are six players currently averaging double figures for the team. Keshon Gilbert has emerged as the team’s MVP, averaging 16.5 ppg and 5.2 apg. Curtis Jones (16.0 ppg and 3.1 apg) is playing at an all-league level himself, while sophomore forward Milan Momcilovic (11.6) is one of the best stretch forwards in NCAA Basketball, shooting 46% from deep.

As the highest-ranked Big 12 team, Iowa State has positioned itself as a favorite to win the regular-season title. They can get off to a good start in league play, taking on Colorado on the road on Monday, followed by home matchups with Baylor and Utah.
