3. Auburn (3-0)
If we based these types of rankings on performances alone, there would have been few arguments against Auburn as the top team in the nation last week. An incredible start to the season for Bruce Pearl’s gang included that wild road win at Houston, currency for their resume much later in the season. The Tigers will certainly play in hostile environments again, especially in league play, though they got a much easier schedule this past week.
The only game on the docket came against Kent State on Wednesday, with the Tigers handling the MAC foes in a 79-56 victory. Johni Broome continued shouldering the load with 18 points and 12 rebounds, leading an interior offense that’s become one of the best in the nation. Chaney Johnson also added 18 points off the bench, with Auburn shooting 49% as a team.
After an outstanding opening week, Auburn did exactly what they needed to do against a much easier foe. Their offense is playing very efficient basketball, with Broome living up to any and all preseason expectations. The Tigers will certainly be challenged and struggle sometime in the weeks ahead, but it won’t come next week, with North Alabama not exactly posing much of a threat next Monday night.
