12. Mark Mitchell, Missouri Tigers
The Missouri Tigers are 11-2 on the season, already eclipsing its win total from last season (eight). While Missouri may not have had the strongest non-conference schedule in college basketball, a win over Kansas and close losses to Memphis and Illinois is nothing to write off about. What has been the key to Missouri’s rapid resurgence? There are many answers, but one lies within Duke transfer Mark Mitchell.
Mitchell, who leads the Tigers in points (13.8) and rebounds (5.8) has been a star in the making in Columbia. The former five-star wing brings NBA-level talent to the table as a versatile, lengthy left-handed three-level scorer. Now here comes the hard part: The never-forgoing, ever-so-grueling SEC. If Mark Mitchell can continue his strong play, the Tigers can not only get through the SEC but have its eyes set on Selection Sunday.
11. JT Toppin, Texas Tech Red Raiders
The 2024-25 Texas Tech Red Raiders may have more questions than answers entering the New Year but the impact of JT Toppin is not one of them. The difference he makes on the floor is immeasurable.
Toppin, who had one of the best freshman seasons in the country last year at New Mexico, is averaging 19.5 PPG and nearly 11 rebounds. Toppin sustained a knee injury that kept him out for over a month but picked up right where he left off on Tuesday with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Despite the loss, having Toppin back into the fold is a must for the Red Raiders moving forward.
10. Adou Thiero, Arkansas Razorbacks
Adou Thiero’s development has been fascinating to monitor -- and it’s paying dividends for John Calipari’s first-year Razorback squad. From a reserve role in his freshman season at Kentucky to being a consistent player in the rotation in his second season, Thiero has made an even bigger jump this time in Fayetteville.
Leading the Razorbacks in points (17.8) and rebounds (5.8), Thiero has skyrocketed up the NBA Draft mock boards, bringing an elite level of motor and explosiveness to the hardwood. The upside is evident. And if he can get the three to fall with more consistency, perhaps the instant impact transfer can be higher on this list come March.
