2. Iowa State (16-0)
Every team is tested and Iowa State is no different, it’s just that the Cyclones have passed all of the tests in the first half of their season. Nonconference play saw impressive play, especially that win over Purdue that we’ll likely mention every week until the Tournament. The real challenge begins now in a Big 12 race that Iowa State can absolutely win if they keep playing smart basketball.
The Cyclones notched their first conference road win on Wednesday, winning 70-60 at Baylor. Tamin Lipsey led with 24 points while Joshua Jefferson had an impressive showing with 19 points and 17 rebounds in the win. Iowa State did exactly what they needed again this weekend, taking care of Oklahoma State in an 83-71 victory at home. Jefferson scored 19 points and Milan Momcilovic added 18 points.
Those three players are all playing inspired ball and let’s not act like this is just a three man show. During T. J. Otzelberger’s years in Ames this has been the story for a team that doesn’t lean on star power but on smart team ball with great defensive intensity. Iowa State has taken care of their business and earned a place among the season’s elite, though challenges await them. Nobody enjoys a trip to Lawrence and they’ll see a desperate Kansas team in just a few days.
