4. Purdue (13-1)
The only time things went wrong for Purdue came about a month ago in a tough performance against Iowa State. Outside of that effort, the Boilermakers have looked the part of a national contender, evident in big wins over Alabama, Auburn, and Texas Tech, with the latter two by more than 25 points. Now as Big Ten really gets going, the Boilermakers have that opportunity to prove they’re the best of the best.
One last nonconference opportunity brought a 101-60 win over Kent State back on Monday night. The Boilermakers got 19 points from Fletcher Loyer and a sturdy 15-point, 12-rebound performance from Trey Kaufman-Renn. On Saturday, Purdue headed to Wisconsin and didn’t leave town until nabbing an 89-73 win over the Badgers. Loyer again led the charge with 20 points while also five starters scored at least 11 in a nice balanced team win in Madison.
Purdue has picked up a few road wins now and are off to a 3-0 start in the Big Ten. Matt Painter knows that the real work has yet to begin, as there are some menacing foes to come during league play much later in the season. For now, this talented lineup keeps performing at a high level, boasting the nation’s most efficient offense. They’ll stay right at home for Washington and Penn State in the next week.
