5. Houston (26-5)

You never know quite what you’re going to get in the Big 12 this season. We’ve already looked at a few other teams from this league but it’s clear that Houston remains among the best of the best yet another season. The Cougars had a really tough stretch in their schedule and a three-game skid last month, but these final few games have allowed them to get right back on the horse.

They looked solid enough in Wednesday night’s home finale, thwarting Baylor in a 77-64 win. Kingston Flemings was electric with 21 points and 7 assists while Emanuel Sharp added 19 points himself. Over the weekend, the Cougars dug themselves an early hole at Oklahoma State but fought back for an 82-75 win on the road. Chase McCarty really impressed with 20 points off the bench while Flemings added 13 points and 9 assists.

Defense has been the calling card for Houston basketball in recent memory but don’t underestimate what this offense can accomplish as well. The Cougars have a unique combination of young talent and real experience and despite those struggles look like one of the most complete teams in a very strong Big 12. We’ll see if they can complete what amounts to quite a gauntlet at the Big 12 Tournament next week.
