12. Michigan State (8-1)

You can’t argue against the early results and the Spartans simply won games in the month of November. This team did brilliant work against Arkansas and Kentucky, took care of business in Fort Myers, and look the part of a program that can win another Big Ten title. Even with what transpired this week, Michigan State still looks like a team that will make waves in the months ahead.

The week started on the right foot, knocking out previously unbeaten Iowa 71-52 back on Tuesday in the Big Ten premiere. Coen Carr had 15 points, Jaxon Kohler had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and the Spartans soared to another nice win. Things didn’t go according to plan on Saturday afternoon, as the Spartans lost 66-60 at home to a talented Duke team. Carson Cooper excelled with 16 points and 16 rebounds but Michigan State struggled to score and just didn’t make enough plays late.

Disregarding any preseason expectations or recent thoughts, Michigan State hung with this tough Duke team and has several great wins already on their resume. This team has offensive issues sometimes but remains a very strong defense and will be a threat as the season moves forward. One of the favorites in the Big Ten, they get another early taste of conference action at Penn State next weekend.
