8. Michigan State (25-7)
There was a stretch during Big Ten play not too long ago where Michigan State looked like a potential national champion threat. We’re not saying the Spartans are out of the running for that title, especially as they entered play on a five-game win streak that included wins over UCLA, Purdue, and Indiana. The latter two were on the road and the Spartans were reaching their apex in March, but perhaps we need to slow our roll on this team.
The regular season ended Sunday on a sour note, falling 90-80 in a tough game against rival Michigan. Jaxon Kohler had 23 points and Jeremy Fears Jr. added 22 points and 9 assists in another loss to the Wolverines. After receiving the triple-bye in the Big Ten Tournament, Michigan State’s run there was just as brief, falling 88-84 against UCLA. Fears played very well with 21 points and 13 assists but the defense couldn’t slow the Bruins or complete the comeback late.
This team was looking great a week ago and also had some pretty nice stretches earlier in the season. For Tom Izzo and his crew, it’s all about getting the most out of this talent. The defense simply has to play better and has been allowing too many easy shots in their recent ball games. Michigan State’s offense has played very efficient ball down the stretch run but their defense is going to create a quick exit if it doesn’t improve fast.
