Auburn is the current top team in the country. In most years, that would be the end of the conversation, but this season, the top team in the country is one that brings a lot of debate. There are four teams who all have a claim on the top spot of the rankings. There has been much debate about who the rightful number 1 team in the country is, and everyone is happy to share their opinions.
The top four teams in the country are all very close to each other. All these teams have taken turns beating each other, and two of them are in the same conference. There is not much that can be done to convince me that there are teams outside of the top 4 who are worthy of this ranking or who will likely deserve a top seed in the NCAA tournament.
Tennessee is not one of the teams in discussion for the top team in the country anymore. They were number 1 in the country because they were the last undefeated team playing in a power conference. They were not the best team in the country and had not played like it all season long. The Volunteers are out of the running because they got beat by 30 at Florida as the number 1 team in the country. Tennessee can still work their way back to the top team in the country, as they still play Auburn and Alabama in the SEC, but right now they are not worthy of the top team in the country.
Now, with that out of the way, we can get into the great debate of who should be number 1. I, like many others, have my opinions and have watched all the teams in question multiple times. Every team has something they are fantastic at, and there are very few flaws in any of the teams. Everyone will get a clearer picture of who deserves to be number 1 as the year rolls on but right now they all keep winning, which means the debate rolls on.
