Isaiah Santos becomes the first member of Minnesota’s 2027 recruiting class, giving Niko Medved an important early victory on the trail.
Minnesota basketball coach Niko Medved identified Isaiah Santos as a priority recruit. That persistence has now delivered one of the Gophers’ most significant high school commitments in years.
Santos, a four-star small forward from Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Texas, announced his commitment to Minnesota after visiting the program last week. He chose the Gophers after also taking summer visits to Colorado, Butler and Texas Tech.
The 6-foot-5, 210-pound wing is ranked No. 78 nationally in the 247Sports Composite and No. 84 in the Rivals Industry Ranking. Rivals called him Minnesota’s highest-ranked commitment in nearly a decade.
That distinction makes Santos more than simply the first piece of the Gophers’ 2027 class. He is an early indication that Medved can convince nationally recognized prospects to buy into what he is building in Minneapolis.
Isaiah Santos brings production from every level
Santos has produced everywhere he has played.
During his junior season at Seven Lakes, he averaged 22.6 points, 11.2 rebounds and three assists per game. His performance earned him All-Greater Houston Player of the Year honors and helped Seven Lakes finish 35-1.
The Spartans climbed to No. 8 in the MaxPreps national rankings, while Santos earned Class 6A all-state recognition from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
He carried that production into the summer.
Playing for AB Elite on the Nike EYBL circuit, Santos averaged 14.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 50 percent from the field. He also represented Brazil at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup, averaging 14.3 points and 8.7 rebounds as Brazil captured the bronze medal.
Those numbers help explain why Santos collected offers from Houston, Illinois, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, UCF and several other programs.
Minnesota was able to beat them all.

Niko Medved is giving Minnesota a reason to believe
Medved still has plenty of work ahead of him after Minnesota finished 15-18 and 11th in the Big Ten during his first season.
However, the Gophers have already shown their willingness to reshape the roster. Minnesota signed five transfer portal players this offseason and recently rewarded Medved with a contract extension.
Landing Santos provides something different. Transfers can help Minnesota immediately, but a top-100 high school commitment gives Medved a foundational player who can become part of the program’s long-term identity.
Minnesota may only sign one or two high school prospects in its 2027 class because of the NCAA’s new five-years-to-play-five rule. That makes each available scholarship even more important.
If Santos is ultimately the centerpiece of a small class, the Gophers could do much worse. He has the size, rebounding ability and scoring production to make an impact in the Big Ten, while his international experience adds another intriguing layer to his development.
Medved has not rebuilt Minnesota yet. But by securing the program’s best-ranked recruit in nearly a decade, he has delivered the type of recruiting win that could make the rebuilding process considerably more exciting.
