The transfer portal truly does affect every single one of the hundreds of D1 programs in the country. It’s not always about great talent being snatched up from mid-majors to power conference teams, those same teams sometimes lose their own talent. That’s the case here as Duke sees one of their star freshmen in Nikolas Khamenia leaving for a surprising new landing spot.

Khamenia is a 6-8 wing from Los Angeles considered a 5-star recruit and Top 20 member of many recruiting rankings last season. He arrived in Durham and played something of a significant role for the Blue Devils, appearing in all 38 games for Duke largely in a backup role, though he certainly showed something in his first collegiate campaign.

UConn lands Duke transfer Nikolas Khamenia

The freshman put up 5.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game and was on court for the Blue Devils around half the time in their games. He made 34% of his 3-pointers and likely hopes to keep growing that aspect of his game in the time ahead, but let’s not act like Khamenia isn’t a really good piece. He may not have put up monster numbers but his athleticism, frame, and maturity are a big reason why Duke was so high on him going into this season.

He earned some starts early in the season and really showed out with 10 points and 9 rebounds in a win at Michigan State in early December. Khamenia’s season-high was just 14 points, but one of those efforts came against Clemson during the ACC Tournament, which Duke would eventually win again. Again, his numbers didn’t stand out during the NCAA Tournament but he’s a physical player with the potential to grow into a star.

Oddly enough, his freshman season was ended in the Elite Eight when UConn hit a miraculous shot in the closing seconds. Now, he’ll hope to have a major step forward as a sophomore with those same Huskies, becoming the latest addition for Dan Hurley and company. Shedding seniors like Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr., UConn certainly needs a new boost and are expecting big things out of Khamenia in year two.

If we can put it all together, Khamenia could be the next big thing in the frontcourt for the Huskies, with the ability to post up and make shots from all over the court. He joins Najai Hines as notable pieces for UConn already from the portal on a team hoping to get back to the national title game after three trips in the last four seasons. The potential and expectations are sky high but will Khamenia live up to the hype with the opportunities available here?
