For a brief moment, perfection was still alive.
Millions of brackets were filled out. Every pick felt right at the time. Maybe this would be the year someone finally nailed it.
Instead, it took less than two days for that idea to fall apart.
With Iowa’s 67-61 win over Clemson, the last perfect brackets in ESPN’s Tournament Challenge were officially eliminated. Just like that, perfection was gone before the first weekend even finished.
That’s March Madness.

Early upsets started the damage
It wasn’t just one game that did it. It was a steady build of chaos from the very beginning.
Day 1 gave us multiple results that immediately shook things up:
- 12 High Point 83, 5 Wisconsin 82
- 11 VCU 82, 6 North Carolina 78 (OT)
- 11 Texas 79, 6 BYU 71
- 9 Saint Louis 102, 8 Georgia 77
Even some of the favorites that won didn’t exactly make things easy. Duke had to work to get past Siena 71-65. Close calls like that only added pressure to already fragile brackets.
Day 2 finished it off
By the time Friday rolled around, most brackets were already hanging by a thread.
Then more tight games came in:
- 7 Kentucky 89, 10 Santa Clara 84 (OT)
- 9 Utah State 86, 8 Villanova 76
- 7 UCLA 75, 10 UCF 71
And finally:
- 9 Iowa 67, 8 Clemson 61
That was it. No more perfect brackets left in ESPN’s contest.
This is exactly how March is supposed to feel
Every year, people chase the perfect bracket.
Every year, it ends early.
That’s what makes this tournament different. It’s unpredictable, emotional, and impossible to control. You can study matchups, follow trends, and still get knocked out by one result you didn’t see coming.
Now that perfection is off the table, the real game begins.
It’s no longer about being perfect.
It’s about surviving.
