Shaka Smart has never needed every Marquette recruit to arrive as a finished product. Philipe Ndong might become the latest example of why.
The 6-foot-8 forward from The Newman School in Boston committed to Marquette, completing the Golden Eagles’ 2027 recruiting class. Ndong is rated as a four-star prospect by 247Sports and On3 and ranks No. 93 overall in the composite.
The ranking is respectable. The developmental possibilities are more interesting.
Philipe Ndong already owns a valuable offensive skill
Ndong made 38% of his 3-point attempts during the UAA season and converted 79% of his free throws, according to Anonymous Eagle.
Those percentages suggest legitimate shooting touch.
At 6-foot-8, that skill gives Ndong a foundation Marquette can build upon. He can space the floor as a forward, attack closeouts and potentially create difficult defensive decisions once he adds strength.
The physical development will be important.
Looking for some muscle
Ndong currently weighs approximately 180 pounds and likely will need additional muscle before handling consistent Big East contact. Bigger forwards could move him around inside, while stronger wings might attempt to attack him off the dribble.
That does not make him a poor recruit. It makes patience essential.
Ndong is the son of Boniface Ndong, who played professionally in the NBA and internationally. That background does not guarantee physical development, but it gives the younger Ndong familiarity with the demands of high-level basketball.
Smart has built Marquette around continuity and development rather than treating the transfer portal as the only solution to every roster problem.
Ndong fits that approach.
He might not arrive ready to play 30 minutes immediately. With time, strength development and coaching, his shooting could make him an especially difficult matchup.
Marquette is betting that the player Ndong becomes will be more important than the player he is on the day he arrives.
That is a familiar wager for Smart.
It also has produced some of the Golden Eagles’ most important success.
