There were 6 ranked teams in action on Wednesday night, and heading into the games, it looked as if only one of those ranked teams would lose. College Basketball did its thing last night and saw Rutgers, behind Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey, beat Illinois at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights now have four quad 1 wins and still have a very outside chance of making the NCAA tournament if they can go on a run. The Big Ten had some other huge games as well. Michigan fought off Oregon to keep pace at the top of the league. The Ducks have now lost 4 in a row. Nebraska has won their third in a row and second in a row on the road. They used a huge second half from Brice Williams and Connor Essegian to beat Washington. The Huskies started out 8 of 9 from three over the first 10 minutes before Nebraska could take control of the game.
The game of the night took place in the SEC. It saw Tennessee have a huge offensive night and beat Missouri. The Tigers made 12 threes to keep the game close all night. The Volunteers now have two huge wins in to start February and look the part of a one seed. If they continue their current course, they will secure that 4th one seed, likely joining two other SEC teams on the 1 line. Duke blew out Syracuse to move to 12-0 in the ACC. Memphis was the last ranked team to play, and they won again. The Tigers have never won the American conference under head coach Penny Hardaway. They currently sit in first place in the league.
It was a big night on the bubble as well. Arkansas picked up their second straight quad 1 road win with a win at Texas. That puts Arkansas close to the field. Georgia beat LSU to stay on the bubble. SMU beat Virginia Tech to stay on the bubble. Cincinnati stays alive by picking up a huge road win over UCF. The Bearcats are still on the bubble, and UCF, who needs wins to get off the bubble, took a big loss. Finally, Wake Forest beat Stanford in Palo Alto to inch closer to the field. The Demon Deacons have a favorable schedule for the rest of February.
It's mid-major Thursday, and there are not very many power conference games today. In fact, there is only one power conference game today, and it takes place in the Big Ten. The rest of the schedule is made up of low and mid-major conferences. The West Coast conference is going to have some huge games today and could see the top team lose. The game of the day just so happens to be the lone power conference game. Maryland visits Ohio State. Maryland enters the game securely in the NCAA tournament field and on a four game-winning streak. They have figured out their road woes under head coach Kevin Willard and are now ranked. Ohio State is a bubble team that needs to keep winning to keep itself in the NCAA tournament field. The Buckeyes are currently in a very tough stretch of games, but if they continue to make threes and rebound, they are going to win a lot. This game is going to be close. Enjoy the hoops!
