Loser: Detroit Pistons

It marked somewhat of a surprise when the Detroit Pistons selected Ron Holland out of the NBA G-League Ignite with the fifth overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft. Now, this is not necessarily a knock on Holland himself. He is an elite talent -- one that was worthy of a lottery selection -- with a high-level motor, relentless defensive instincts, leaps of athleticism and an ability to run the open floor. Those are the types of skills that can translate at any level, especially in the NBA.

However, how he will fit in Detroit is a bit of a head-turner -- at least at this very moment. The main knock on Holland, the former five-star recruit who originally committed to Texas before foregoing the collegiate route, is his ability to shoot the rock efficiently. With the G League Ignite, Holland shot only 24% from three, and surrounding him on a Pistons team that shot just 34.8 percent from behind the arc leaves more questions than answers.

Thankfully for the Pistons, they aren’t in “win-now mode”, meaning figuring out how the fit will work can, and most likely will, take some time.
