9 players who can help their team advance in the Big Ten Tournament
By Joey Loose
Jahmir Young (Maryland)
It’s year five for Young, which means time is running out on a college basketball career full of memories and impact. He spent three seasons at Charlotte before joining new coach Kevin Willard with the Terrapins last season, blossoming into one of his important weapons in College Park.
As a fifth-year senior, Young is putting up the best numbers of his career, even surpassing his production back in his days in Conference USA. He’s averaging 20.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists this season, sometimes single-handedly helming a Terrapins squad that’s taken a few steps back this year.
That’s not for a lack of effort on Young’s part, who’s been electric at times this season. He scored 37 at UCLA back before Christmas and dropped 28 a few weeks later in an upset win at Illinois. Young has basically been better away from home, with other clutch efforts at Northwestern (36 points) and Michigan State (31 points) later in the season.
What exactly does this mean for the Terrapins in the Big Ten Tournament? As the 12-seed they have a long road ahead if they’re going to make noise in the event. Young’s presence is a major boost and he’s the kind of player who can almost effortlessly drop 30 points multiple times this week to spearhead these Terrapins.
