9. Virginia Cavaliers

After barely making the NCAA Tournament before getting blown out in the First Four game, the Cavaliers had to replace several key pieces. That included star guard and leading scorer/passer Reece Beekman, as well as star defending wing Ryan Dunn, who is off to the NBA.

The new-look backcourt is led by Isaac McKneely, who averaged 12.3 ppg for UVA. FSU transfer Jalen Warley and former K-State guard Darrin Ames are the new ball-handlers, while starter Andrew Rohde could have a big second year with the program. The recent season-ending injury to Elijah Gertrude was a blow since he was a breakout candidate.

The biggest difference between last year’s roster and this one is the offensive potential of the frontcourt. TJ Power is a former 5-star prospect from Duke who showed flashes in limited minutes and will be a major breakout candidate as a focal point of the offense. Elijah Saunders (6.2 ppg and 3.6 rpg) is a 6’8 forward from San Diego State who comes from a defensive system and should be a natural fit. Blake Buchanan is back as well for the Cavaliers to keep the depth strong.

UVA could and should be a better offensive unit next season if Power has a big year but losing their two best defenders (Beekman/Dunn) is something to consider. If this roster isn’t good enough defensively, they may not be able to get back to the Big Dance.
