Atlantic Sun Basketball: In-depth look at Austin Peay star Sai Witt

The Atlantic Sun is a conference loaded with individual talent but one player in the league is poised for a breakout. The breakout could also mean he gets his team to the NCAA tournament.

The calendar flipped to August which means summer workouts are in full swing and the season is getting closer by the day. That means that the rosters are starting to take shape and everyone is getting a better view of who the stars are going to be on each roster and in each conference. The Atlantic Sun is the next conference up in the Mid Major player spotlight and it takes us to Clarksville Tennessee to check in on a star in the making at Austin Peay.

Heading into last season the Governors had zero expectations they were on their third coach in the last 5 seasons and had yet to win much in the Atlantic Sun. The Governors were always one of the top teams in the Ohio Valley and many expected the same to carry over to the Atlantic Sun. The reality is the conference is harder and far more competitive than the Ohio Valley was. The Atlantic Sun is better from top to bottom.

Austin Peay is on an upward trend with current head coach Corey Gipson. The Governors finished 10-6 in the league last year and were one game away from the NCAA tournament before a loss to Stetson. Gipson was fresh off taking the Northwestern State program to the finals of the Southland the season before. Gipson decided to take the job in the Atlantic Sun to rebuild the Austin Peay program and he brought most of his talent from Northwestern State with him for the first season.

It paid off and the rebuild is going well, however this year the Governors stars from last season are no longer on campus but the Governors still have a lot of talent back from last season and one of those players is ready for a breakout season. Sai Witt already had a fantastic season for Austin Peay last year and was a big part of their success last season. Witt is going to be relied on to be a leader on and off the court and hopefully he will have the breakout season that coach Gipson expects and will help get this team to the tournament.
