The Atlantic Sun is a conference loaded with individual talent but one player in the league is poised for a breakout. The breakout could also mean he gets his team to the NCAA tournament.

Why you should know Sai Witt

I mentioned earlier that Witt already had a great season. He was the first player in Austin Peay history to be named the Conference Sixth Man of the Year. Witt did start over half of the games played but still did enough to earn the sixth man of the year in the conference. Anyone who has followed the career of the big man would have known that his production was not unexpected. As a freshman at Kansas City Community College Witt averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds. He was able to use that season to earn a scholarship to Lincoln University of Missouri where he spent two seasons.

Lincoln University is a Division II HBCU and in his first season, he was a finalist for the player of the year and was named a second team All American. He averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds while shooting almost 60% from the floor. The production dipped his senior year with 14 points and 8 rebounds but it was still a good year that earned him a scholarship to Austin Peay. Witt had an unforgettable experience during his junior season. He initially transferred to UTRGV, never played, and then returned to Lincoln University. The second go around in Division 1 basketball has gone much better as evidenced by the season the big man put together last year.

The reigning sixth man of the year broke out towards the end of the year and gained a lot of positive momentum heading into this season. In the conference title game Witt went for 28 points and 10 rebounds which were his season best totals. Over the entire season the big man put up one of the best seasons by a Governor not named Terry Taylor. The 54% field goal percentage was the best shooting percentage at Austin Peay since Covid 19 and with Witt returning coach Gipson has a legitimate star to build his team around and hopefully get to the NCAA tournament.
