Big 12 Basketball: Way-too-early power rankings for 2024-25 season
7. Arizona State Sun Devils
2023-24 season record: 14-18 (8-12 Pac-12)
From start to finish, the roster last season was never enough to be competitive as a program. The result was a complete roster shakeup, with just about everyone from the main rotation gone. That includes outgoing transfers, Frankie Collins and Jamiya Neal.
Who is back is Adam Miller, who averaged 12.0 ppg on 39% shooting from the field. Center Shawn Phillips (5.5 ppg and 4.3 rpg) started 12 games and will be back as well. The hope is that a better supporting cast will make ASU an instant in the Big 12.
In the backcourt, the Sun Devils added Alston Mason, a 6’2 guard from Missouri State who averaged 17.5 ppg and 3.6 apg. Austin Nunez returns back to the program after a year at Ole Miss, while BJ Freeman is a 6’6 guard/wing from Milwaukee, coming off a career-high 21.1 ppg, 6.6 rpg, and 4.1 apg this past season.
The revamped frontcourt includes 6’9 forward Basheer Jihad (18.6 ppg and 8.0 rpg at Ball State) and 5-star center prospect and former Kentucky commit, Jayden Quaintance. On paper, there’s a ton of firepower and overall talent for ASU to make some noise in the Big 12. Coach Bobby Hurley just has to find a way to make it all work.
