Big East Basketball: 2024 offseason grades for each team
Once again, Big East Basketball is home of the reigning national champions, with the UConn Huskies winning its second straight title. They've certainly had one of the more notable offseasons in the country but what kind of grade should they get?
Here's a look at the offseason grades for each team in the Big East, based on what happened after the national title game.
Butler Bulldogs - Grade: D+
Despite already being one of the country's older teams last season, Butler still had the chance to return almost all of its top players, with all of the seniors having 5th years of eligibility available. However, two starters (Posh Alexander and DJ Davis) elected to enter the transfer portal.
That leaves the question of whether Butler was able to replace them. Alexander averaged 5.0 apg and was a quality defender and the Bulldogs’ new guard transfer was Kolby King, who averaged 10.4 ppg and 1.8 apg at Tulane. But he’s more of a combo guard than a true point, meaning that he or Landon Moore will be the starting PG, which is a major question.
The other two incoming transfers are Patrick McCaffery, a stretch forward from Iowa. Jamie Kaiser is a former top-40 prospect from Maryland and could be a breakout candidate to watch. They even got four-star forward prospect Colt Langdon to reclass to the 2024 class to add frontcourt depth, since they weren’t able to add a veteran big man to pair with Andre Screen.
The fact that Butler was able to bring back two key starters (Pierre Brooks and Jahmyl Telfort) is what prevents this offseason from being a disaster. Still, it’s hard to see how the roster got better and if that’s the case, they’ll be hard-pressed to get out of the bottom tier of the Big East.
