Big Ten Basketball: 2024 offseason grades for each team
Purdue Boilermakers - Grade: B-
Purdue is the lone team to not land a single transfer this offseason so judging what they’ve done will be tough. They also suffered the single biggest roster loss in Zach Edey, a two-time National Player of the Year star who dropped 37 points in the national title game. He’s gone, along with starting guard Lance Jones, as well as Mason Gillis, who was the Big Ten 6th Man of the Year last season.
Another “loss” for the program happened with Kanon Catchings, the highest-ranked incoming freshman prospect, de-committed from Purdue and eventually landed at BYU. That was big since the team didn’t replace him with anyone. But on the bright side, one of the other future Boilermakers has emerged as a future star for the team in Daniel Jacobson, a 7’3 center who could be the next great Purdue big.
The rest of the roster is back, including the guard duo of Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer. Myles Colvin and Camden Heide could be breakout sophomore candidates, while forwards Caleb Furst, Trey Kaufmann-Renn, and Will Berg will have the chance to help replace Edey’s overall production.
It’s been another “boring” offseason for Purdue but that has worked in the past, so Coach Matt Painter gets the benefit of the doubt. The team will take a hit without Edey but it shouldn’t be as much as some may expect.
