Big Ten Basketball: 2024 offseason grades for each team
Wisconsin Badgers - Grade: C-
The first month of the season went as rough as possible for Wisconsin, taking multiple key losses. Star guard AJ Storr transferred out to Kansas, while three-year starting PG Chucky Hepburn also hit the portal. Forward Tyler Wahl was the only rotation piece without eligibility left so the backcourt getting depleted hurt.
It also took a while for the Badgers to find new guards from the portal but they finally landed some. Camren Hunter averaged around 15 ppg at Central Arkansas two years ago but missed last season with an injury. John Tonje, who missed most of last year too at Missouri is a former double-digit scorer at Colorado State. Max Klesmit and Kamari McGee coming back helps with the backcourt depth, which should keep the roster balanced.
Steven Crowl is set to be the best player on the team and the lead forward, joined by transfer Xavier Amos, though he might be a downgrade from Wahl’s impact. The lack of proven depth is also a concern on the roster too.
In the end, Wisconsin’s offseason was salvaged by keeping its most important player, John Blackwell. If the rising sophomore guard becomes a breakout star and leader on the perimeter, that could be enough to have them in the postseason mix. Otherwise, the early offseason departures may be too much to overcome.
