Big Ten Basketball: Biggest storylines for each team entering 2024-25 season
Maryland Terrapins: Can its portal additions fix shooting woes?
The Terrapins were not-so-great from the field in 2023-24. Last season’s eFG%? 47.6 percent. 320th in the country. Last season's three-point percentage? 29.8%. 347th in the country. Not ideal.
Even with the heartbeat of the program for the past two seasons, Jahmir Young, gone, it's the trio of transfers Kevin Willard assembled -- Ja'Kobi Gillespie (Belmont), Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech) and Selton Miguel (South Florida) -- that can help fix its shooting woes. In their most recent season, the three transfers combined for an average shooting percentage of 43.1% from the field and 34.6% from three-point range.
Although it's not a monumental upgrade, it's a much-needed, needle-moving upgrade for a team that must shoot better if it hopes to get back into the NCAA Tournament.
Their frontcourt is elite in Julian Reese and five-star C Derik Queen, meaning the storyline for the 2024-25 Maryland Terrapins will be how its backcourt can shoot efficiently to eliminate many of the close losses Maryland endured last season.
