Bracketology 2024: 5 key takeaways from Saturday’s top-16 reveal
4. Creighton Dayton = snubbed?
Two teams that many thought had a case to be included in the top-16 reveal were Creighton and Dayton.
Creighton -- coming off of a recent 79-57 road win over Butler thanks to an impressive second-half rout -- most likely has moved to the four-seed line now considering Wisconsin (seeded 16th overall) continued its slide in its recent 88-86 OT loss to Iowa.
Dayton was not too far behind either as the Flyers bring a similar mold to San Diego State resume-wise: zero losses outside of Q1 games.
So why were they not included?
The reasoning is simple. Wisconsin got the edge over both Creighton and Dayton on Saturday because they own six Q1 wins with 11 of their 17 wins coming from Q1 and Q2 games. Although the Badgers are currently in a free-fall and almost surely moved out of the top 16 after Saturday’s loss, the metrics are still fond of the Badgers despite recent struggles. But at some point, the losses become too much to outweigh strong metrics.
5. Clear-cut number-one seeds
Charles McClelland, the NCAA Division I Selection Committee chairman, stated that for the first time, the four number-one seeds were unanimously chosen in the same order.
It was pretty clear that Purdue -- the number one overall seed -- and UConn were the top two seeds, although the order of the two was subject to debate.
Houston, the third number-one seed, was a clear inclusion too with eight Q1 wins alongside a number-one NET ranking -- a spot they have held since Dec. 16.
Lastly, Arizona grabbed the final number one seed thanks to the fact that the Wildcats own seven Q1 wins, have strong OOC and overall SOS numbers and have five true road wins despite questionable losses to Stanford and Oregon State.
Overall, it was a clear-cut one through four and the committee left no room for surprises for the number one overall seeds in the top-16 reveal.
