Gonzaga

Every NCAA Tournament since 1999 has involved Gonzaga but could that streak be coming to an end. This Bulldogs squad isn’t as dominant as some recent seasons, and are certainly not on the same level as those recent teams that reached the national title game. Gonzaga lost their big chances in nonconference play, falling to top teams in Purdue and Connecticut as well as San Diego State and Washington. Throw in more recent results and there are legitimate concerns in Spokane.

Though the Bulldogs won a fifth straight game last week, silencing Loyola Marymount with little issue, the weekend really hurt. Gonzaga lost at home to Saint Mary’s in a game marred by controversy at the end. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs were handed a 64-62 loss, their first home loss of the season. This wasn’t just disappointing because it was a loss, but it was a major blown opportunity.

Gonzaga falls to a paltry 0-5 against Quad 1 competition. Their NET is still in a somewhat comfortable position at 27, but it’s really hard for the Bulldogs to impress, especially against the weaker teams in the WCC. Fortunately, the Bulldogs will have a few more chances to get off the snide, including this weekend’s road trip to Kentucky. With how they’ve been playing in conference play, can we actually expect a shocker at Rupp?
