Caitlin Clark and Iowa taking on MacKenzie Holmes and Indiana in top-15 matchup
Two of the best players in all of women's NCAA Basketball will face off between Caitlin Clark of Iowa and Mackenzie Holmes of Indiana. Which team has the ultimate edge?
TV schedule: Saturday, January 13th, 8:00 pm ET, FOX
Arena: Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa
Coming off a spectacular past season where she and the team made it to the national title game, Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes (16-1, 5-0 Big Ten) look like national contenders once again. They're unbeaten in league play, coming off a 96-71 road win over Purdue. Clark went for a triple-double, producing 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in the win.
On the season, Clark leads all of NCAA Basketball, men or women, with 31.0 ppg, along with 7.3 rpg and 7.7 apg on 40% shooting from deep on a whopping 12.5 attempts a game. She's had at least 21 points in all 17 games, including a season-high 44 against Virginia Tech, the top team they've played this season.
The Hawkeyes take on the team they're tied with in the Big Ten standings, Indiana. The Hoosiers are 14-1 (5-0), coming off a 75-67 win over Penn State, led by 21 points and 13 rebounds (6 off) from MacKenize Holmes. The 6'3 forward is not only an All-American in her own right but she's also a former Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. On the season, Holmes is producing 19.7 ppg and 7.3 rpg, including a 30-point effort versus Illinois.
To this point, Indiana has shown to be the biggest threat to Iowa for the Big Ten title. And while Holmes might not be as good as Clark is one-on-one, her supporting cast could be better, thanks to 15 ppg scoring guard, Sara Scalia.
Clark is going to get hers but like in their loss to Kansas State, an inefficient game by her combined with the Hoosiers' offense going off could make this game an upset bid. Ultimately, I think the home team will find a way to win in an entertaining shootout.
Prediction: Iowa 90, Indiana 84
