Gonzaga Basketball: Takeaways from Round of 32 win over Kansas Jayhawks

Coaching
This one goes without saying, right? Yes, we all know Mark Few is a good coach but is he actually underrated? I’m not crazy. He always seems to get his team ready and pushes all of the right buttons when the game is on the line. Gonzaga never seems to have the right guys in they never miss an assignment on defense, and they rarely miss an easy shot when the game is on the line. The players are of course the ones making the shots and executing the plays that are called but coach Few gives this team confidence and makes sure they know they are going to be there at the end of the game.
Few has won a ton of games, especially in the NCAA tournament. He has earned the reputation that he has been given but for my money, he is one of the three best current coaches in the game. You can put Bill Self and Danny Hurley in there accordingly. He is right there with those two players. Gonzaga and coach Few have always been able to get the most out of their players even the ones who come in as highly ranked recruits. Those guys always leave Spokane better than they came in. Few will never get enough credit for that.
The other thing to think about here is the number of guys who coached under Few who are coaching very successful programs. Leon Rice at Boise State has a consistent tournament team every year and while the Broncos have yet to win a game in the event they make it every year. Tommy Lloyd is the head coach at Arizona and he has been good enough to be one of the top teams in the country every year and has kept Arizona with their normal prestige. Coach Few outdueled Bill Self in the second round but there are more to come as the tournament continues.
