While other stories have certainly overshadowed the Transfer Portal in recent days, there continues to be a flurry of movement. One of the latest commits was Seattle big man Brandton Chatfield agreeing to spend his final collegiate season out at Iowa State.

A 6’10 center from Clarkston, Washington, Chatfield has spent his entire career in his home state. He redshirted and barely saw the court across two seasons at Washington State before growing into an important weapon for Seattle across the last three seasons.

A key frontcourt piece in the WAC, Chatfield averaged 9.4 points and 5.4 rebounds for the Pioneers while making 65% of his 2-point attempts on the year. He’s been a great defensive presence for Seattle and was among the WAC’s leaders in rebounds, blocks, and a few other metrics.

Chatfield actually got this past season off to a hot start, scoring at least 16 points in five different nonconference games. He has some game outside the arc but is more of an interior presence. While he wasn’t putting up his most impressive numbers down the stretch, he did help lead Seattle to the CBI title in recent weeks.

The raw numbers don’t exactly jump off the page, but Chatfield made an impact in the middle for a very solid Seattle group. It’s not a big surprise that he opted to transfer for his final year of eligibility, landing in the Big 12. Chatfield will reunited with former Washington State teammate Dishon Jackson and hope to earn significant minutes in the Cyclones’ frontcourt next season.

He’ll add experience to the back end for Iowa State and give them another option down the stretch, as T. J. Otzelberger is always looking for talent to fill out his roster. We don’t know the exact breakdown or what we can expect from Chatfield, but putting up the same kind of effort on defense in Ames will earn him plenty of praise from this program.
